5-Minute Evening Breathwork for Better Sleep

Trouble falling asleep is one of the most common concerns we hear from members. The good news: your breath is a built-in relaxation tool, and five quiet minutes before bed can make a real difference.

Why breathing helps you sleep

Slow, extended exhales activate the parasympathetic nervous system — your body's "rest and digest" mode. Heart rate slows, muscles soften, and the busy mind begins to settle. Unlike sleep medications, breathwork has no side effects and works the very first night.

A simple 5-minute bedtime practice

  1. Settle in (1 min): Sit comfortably in a chair or lie in bed. Close your eyes or soften your gaze. Place a hand on your belly.
  2. Belly Breathing (1 min): Breathe in through your nose for 4 counts, feeling your hand rise. Exhale for 4. Just observe — don't force.
  3. Extended Exhale (2 min): Gradually lengthen the exhale: in for 4, out for 6. If 6 feels long, start with 5. The longer exhale is what calms the nervous system.
  4. Body Scan (1 min): With each exhale, silently relax one area — jaw, shoulders, hands, belly, legs.

Tips for the best results

  • Practice at the same time each evening so your body learns the cue.
  • Dim the lights and put screens away 30 minutes before.
  • If your mind wanders, gently return to counting — that wandering is normal.
  • If you feel dizzy at any point, return to normal breathing and shorten the counts.
